Business Insider deputy editor for economy coverage Bartie Scott spoke with Ryan Teague Beckwith about her start in business journalism.

Here is an excerpt:

What was your first byline?

Almost exactly 10 years ago, I published one of my first stories — a profile of billionaire Tony Langley for Forbes. The story works because of all the upfront work I’d put into valuing Langley’s assets ahead of his inaugural year on the billionaires list. The wealth team operation there, run by Luisa Kroll at the time, was so impressive. It taught me a ton about organizing gobs of information, having your ducks in a row when it comes to the numbers, and uncovering the story.

What was your first real job in journalism?

After my internship on the wealth desk at Forbes, Loren Feldman hired me to be his assistant editor on the small business and entrepreneurship desk.

How did you get it?

As my internship was wrapping up, Luisa let me know about the opening on Loren’s desk. I interviewed with him, and that was that! I was so appreciative. A few months later, my former boss from an internship at Inc. (shoutout Laura Lorber!) called to see if I wanted to come back as a reporter. I liked working for Loren, but I’d also loved being at Inc., and I thought I really needed to nab my first shot at being a full-time reporter, so I said yes and made the switch.
