BuzzFeed seeks a business editor

BuzzFeed News seeks an ambitious editor to lead an award-winning team of reporters on its business desk. The desk punches well above its weight, with reporters regularly bringing in scoops and enterprise stories that shake up the industries they cover. It is a results-oriented team more focused on impact than completism in terms of the stories we choose to cover.

The ideal candidate has a strong vision for what a BuzzFeed News business team can become, is organized, fast-moving, and an excellent story editor. You know what makes a great story, and have an endless ability to generate story ideas across a range of beats and topics, and the desire to help ambitious reporters grow and develop their craft.

You should be intimately familiar with the companies and industries that drive the American and global economies, and how these are changing. A deep knowledge of financial markets and products is a must. You should also be well-versed in consumer trends and habits, and have ideas how to shape coverage that matters to and informs a wide audience.

If all this sounds exciting, please submit a short cover letter, noting:

  • What you think about the current business coverage from BuzzFeed News, and how you would go about making it more impactful. What should we have gone deeper on? What did we miss? What should we have skipped?
  • The highs and lows of your management experience.
  • Three other websites or magazines that you think are producing amazing business coverage, and why you think so.

This position will be based at the BuzzFeed offices in New York City. An edit test will be required.

We are building a team that is diverse in many ways, and want to cast a wide net. We offer competitive compensation and a stock option program, plus a lot of fun.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the editorial and publishing strategy for the BuzzFeed News business desk, top editing and publishing 15 or more stories per week.
  • Manage a team that includes several reporters and one other editor.
  • Work and collaborate with other desks and departments as needed to help the organization most effectively cover news of the day.
  • Collaborate with the video team to produce news videos based off of stories the business team is reporting on.
  • Recruit great reporters to add to the team as needed.

Requirements:

  • At least 8 years of experience writing or editing business content for a journalistic outlet. At least 3 years of that experience should be in an editing position.
  • A critical, skeptical eye for hype / baloney
  • Love for and excitement about the internet
