Longtime business journalist Paul Smalera has been named editor in chief of The Business of Business, a new publication from Thinknum.

Smalera previously was the founding editor of Marker, a publication about business and startups from Medium. Prior to that, he was executive editor at Fast Company, ideas editor at Quartz, and also worked at the New York Times, Fortune, and Reuters.

The Business of Business is a publication for emerging leaders and self-starters. It plans to cover the next generation of business executives, entrepreneurs, and companies as they shape the future of our world. It will also provide insights and examples from the giants of business that our audience can learn from to get ahead.

The publication will use Thinknum data to offer readers unique insights on key industries and public and private markets, context on important news, and the edge they need to outperform peers and competitors.

“We believe infusing business journalism with data gives us an edge no one else has, one that we can share with our audience,” said Smalera in an email. “And we see a history of success in combining media and data. (Think of Bloomberg, Reuters, Dow Jones/WSJ…) Alternative data has yet to have a platform for this kind of storytelling — until now. I’ve always believed in the power of data to tell great stories and I’m beyond excited to prove that out in what we do at The Business of Business.”

Smalera plans on expanding the existing editorial team at Thinknum, along with adding dozens of renowned contributors, to increase coverage of the people, companies, industries, and trends that matter most for the future of the global economy.
