The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing announced Thursday the shortlist for its inaugural Best in Business Book competition, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding business books published between July 30, 2019 and July 30, 2020.
A prestigious panel of judges, led by Pattie Sellers, selected the top five books and seven honorable mentions from 41 entries. Submissions came from publishers such as Random House, Doubleday, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and PublicAffairs.
The twelve books the judges selected for the shortlist are:
- The Price of Peace: Money, Democracy, and the Life of John Maynard Keynes by Zachary D. Carter
- Underwater: How Our American Dream of Homeownership Become a Nightmare by Ryan Dezember
- The Future is Faster Than You Think: How Converging Technologies Are Transforming Business, Industries and Our Lives by Peter H. Diamandis and Steven Kotler
- Dark Towers: Deutsche Bank, Donald Trump, and an Epic Trail of Destruction by David Enrich
- No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram by Sarah Frier
- Lights Out: Pride, Delusion, and the Fall of General Electric by Thomas Gryta and Ted Mann
- Billion Dollar Brand Club: How Dollar Shave Club, Warby Parker, and Other Disruptors Are Remaking What We Buy by Lawrence Ingrassia
- Kochland: The Secret History of Koch Industries and Corporate Power in America by Christopher Leonard
- Facebook: The Inside Story by Steven Levy
- The Price We Pay: What Broke American Health Care—and How to Fix It by Marty Makary, MD
- Pharma: Greed, Lies, and the Poisoning of America by Gerald Posner
- The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution by Gregory Zuckerman
“The judges were very impressed with the quality of all the entries for our inaugural Best in Business Book competition, a testament to the great work our long-form colleagues have done in the past year,” said Caleb Silver, SABEW vice president, contest chair and editor-in-chief at Investopedia. “This shortlist represents the best of the best evaluated by the quality of the reporting, storytelling and scope of the books we reviewed. Congratulations to all the authors and publishers.”
The judges will review the top five books and in mid-November award a $1,000 cash prize to the winner and $500 each for two finalists. The authors will be recognized at SABEW’s virtual conference taking place Nov. 17-20.
