Looking for actionable biz news

Judy Buchenot of Glancer magazine profiled Fox Business Network reporter Sandra Smith about her career and how she views business journalism.

Buchenot writes, “Sandra left Wheaton to attend Louisiana State University. After graduating, she pursued a career doing research and analysis of retail stocks for Aegis Capital. She took on several more positions in the world of finance including being Director of Institutional Sales and Trading at Terra Nova Institutional. She became a reporter for Bloomberg Television before accepting a position with FOX Business Network.

“Although her schedule can be hectic, Sandra explains that ‘it wouldn’t be news if it weren’t changing all of the time. Business just happens to be the biggest story there is these days.’   In August, she was working on a daily segment called ‘The Trade.’ Every night she completed several hours of research to prepare for the 3 to 7 minute report outlining what she calls ‘actionable tradable options. It is not advice. It is just opportunities,’ she notes.

“Periodically throughout the year, Sandra meets with wardrobe consultants who help her plan colorful outfits that are professional but not distracting. ‘About 50% of television is what you look like so you have to pay attention to that,’ she says.

“One of the perks of her job is ‘meetings smart and interesting people every day. Being a journalist gives you access to knowledgeable people.'”
