Largest public companies by state

I regularly get asked by business reporters about how to find the largest public companies in their state. Unless they have a Bloomberg terminal in their newsroom, I haven’t had any other suggestions on a quick and easy way to get such a list.

Until now. I was looking at the Nightly Business Report web site, and they have this information. When you get to the site, click on Financial Tools, and then click on “Stocks of Statewide Interest.” It has the largest publicly traded companies broken down on a state-by-state basis.

I will note that this only lists the top 30 companies for each state based on market capitalization, but it’s a good place to start. Some states, such as Alaska, have less than 30 companies listed. In addition, the market caps are as of Sept. 30, so the rankings may have changed a spot or two for some companies.

Still, this is a valuable resource for any business reporter.
