Details emerge from Bloomberg deal with San Francisco Chronicle

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Talking Biz News has obtained additional details about the deal announced this past week between the San Francisco Chronicle and Bloomberg News, where Bloomberg will provide content to the Chronicle’s business section.

The deal was characterized by someone close to the arrangement as being much different than the one Bloomberg has with the Washington Post, which simply uses Bloomberg content available for anyone who has access to its wire.

For example, a reporter from Bloomberg’s San Francisco bureau will produce a Sunday article focused on the Bay Area economy or company, that will be exclusive to the Chronicle for a 24-hour period.

In addition, the equivalent of a full-time Bloomberg employee will work with the Chronicle on providing creative data — M&A, market and industry insight, etc., and cater and customize that to the local market.

Bloomberg will also be creating for the Chronicle a Union Square Index, which takes the retailers located on the San Francisco landmark and measures their stock performance against Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and the Beverly Hills shopping area.

Bloomberg has been frustrated in recent years with its relationship with newspapers and felt the  need to change the way its approaches its syndication business with newspapers struggling and many news rooms unwilling to change the way they do things.  The deal with the Chronicle is the first local partnership.

The San Jose Mercury News is said to be upset with the arrangement.
