Bloomberg News names senior executive editors

Bloomberg News has named six senior executive editors overseeing various parts of its editorial operation, with some reporting to editor in chief Matthew Winkler and the others reporting to chief of staff Reto Gregori.

The senior executive editors include Laurie Hays, Tim Quinson, Chris Collins, Josh Tyrangiel, Marty Schenker and David Shipley. Gregori also becomes deputy editor in chief.

The details about the promotions were obtained by Talking Biz News by Bloomberg News staffers who watched the video announcement. A Bloomberg spokesman did not respond to two email messages.

Hays is the new senior executive editor overseeing all beat reporting and will report to Winkler. She is currently executive editor for company news at Bloomberg News. She is in charge of Bloomberg’s global coverage of corporations, executives, mergers and acquisitions, law, science, environment and education. She supervises a staff of nearly 400 reporters and editors in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Hays is considered Winkler’s heir apparent by reporters and editors on the staff.

Tyrangiel, who is the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, is named senior executive editor for projects and investigations and will report to Gregori. Tyrangiel is also now in charge of Bloomberg Muse, which covers arts and entertainment.

Tyrangiel joined joined the magazine following its acquisition by Bloomberg L.P. in December 2009. He came from Time magazine.

Schenker, who is currently executive editor in charge of top news at Bloomberg, is a new senior executive editor for terminal news products. He first joined Bloomberg in 1999 and previously was a national news editor at The Wall Street Journal. Schenker is replaced as executive editor in charge of top news by Ken Kohn.

Shipley has been executive editor of Bloomberg View, overseeing its editorial page and its associated columnists and op-ed contributors. He was picked for this position in December 2010 and jointly launched Bloomberg View. He had been the op-ed editor of The New York Times.

Collins is currently executive editor of Asia Pacific. He had been managing editor in Europe and also ran the speed team in Asia. He is now senior executive editor for breaking news.

Quinson was named the organization’s standards editor earlier this month.

In addition, Daniel Hertzberg, who won a Pulitzer Prize while working at The Wall Street Journal, is retiring as executive editor overseeing finance coverage in February. He is being replaced in that role by Otis Bilodeau, who is managing editor of finance coverage.
