Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker writes about the surprise Pulitzer Prize win for Bloomberg CityLab contributing writer Alexandra Lange given that her work was not submitted by the company and Bloomberg has been trying to shut CityLab.
He reports that the Pulitzer likely saved CityLab.
Cartwright reports, “Bloomberg CityLab contributing writer Alexandra Lange had won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism for a series of essays that the Pulitzer committee noted were ‘genre-expanding writing about public spaces for families, deftly using interviews, observations and analysis to consider the architectural components that allow children and communities to thrive.’
“But Micklethwait’s surprise was down to the fact that Lange’s editor, Kriston Capps, had bypassed Bloomberg’s official awards process and quietly submitted for the Pulitzer without informing anyone within the organisation, according to two people familiar with the matter. Executive Editor of Investigations Robert Blau is usually the point person for any Pulitzer submission.
“Micklethwait only found out after his deputy, Reto Gregori contacted him during what turned out to be a massive game of telephone-tag that originated after Capps heard from the Pulitzer committee. He then contacted CityLabs managing editor Nicole Flatow who ran it up the flagpole to the executive editor of digital Katie Boyce, who then called Gregori.”
