Politico health care editor Eli Reyes sent out the following:

We’re delighted to announce that Shawn Zeller is joining POLITICO as a deputy health care editor, overseeing our expanded coverage of the future of health care and working with reporters on key beats including public health and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Shawn comes to us with a deep understanding of Washington after serving in many leadership roles during 17 years at CQ Roll Call, where he most recently was national security editor. Previously, he was the editor of CQ’s magazine. He’s also done everything from hosting podcasts and running polling to overseeing CQ’s New Member Guide. He’s served as a magazine writer, a technology reporter and a senior writer for Politics in America, CQ’s former guide to Congress. In 2008, he covered the presidential campaign for the fact-checking website PolitiFact when it was a joint project of CQ and the St. Petersburg Times.

Before CQ, Shawn was a staff correspondent with Government Executive magazine and a reporter covering lobbying for National Journal. He’s a Boston native and holds a degree in American history and literature from Harvard College.

Shawn lives in Brookland with his wife, who is also a journalist, and two children. He enjoys running, biking, kayaking, hiking, mountain climbing and reading history.

He won the masters division at the 2017 West Virginia state marathon championship in 3:08:19 and has qualified for the Boston Marathon eight times. He set a personal best of 2:58:06 at the 2019 Rehoboth Seashore Marathon. The DC Road Runners Club named him its “Outstanding Masters (40+ year-old) Runner” of 2019. But he came late to running. He ran his first road race in 2012 at age 37. He has won the journalist category at the ACLI Capital Challenge three-mile race three times and is hoping he can join the POLITICO/E&E team in 2023.

Shawn’s first day is today. Please join us in welcoming him to POLITICO.
