The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project has hired business journalist Matt Drange as a U.S.-based reporter, strengthening its capacity to investigate transnational corruption, illicit finance, and the nexus of money and power in North America.

Drange has worked at Business Insider, Forbes magazine, and the Center for Investigative Reporting.

He is well respected for high-impact investigations that have prompted legislative and regulatory change. His reporting on educator sexual misconduct led directly to the passage of a 2025 California law designed to better protect students, triggering numerous resignations, civil lawsuits, and criminal probes. With a colleague, Drange famously broke the story that billionaire investor Peter Thiel had secretly funded a crippling lawsuit against Gawker Media.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matt to the OCCRP team,” said editor in chief Miranda Patrucic in a statement. “His track record of not just uncovering corruption, but driving real-world impact, perfectly aligns with our mission. Matt’s deep expertise in financial and tech-focused investigations will be invaluable as we connect the dots between U.S.-based entities and global illicit financial flows.”

Drange is a longtime member of Investigative Reporters and Editors, serves on the SABEW First Amendment Committee, and teaches investigative reporting at Laney College in Oakland, California.
