Local news is the backbone of America’s democracy, holding leaders accountable and keeping residents informed about the latest happenings in their community.
To support these efforts, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul signed on to support the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act.
The act would grant news publishers a four-year limited antitrust safe harbor to negotiate with the tech platforms for better business terms to support journalism.
Additionally, it will also remove government from business negotiations.
The safe harbor bill as it is otherwise known will allow big and small publishers in all 50 states to ask tech-giants such as Google and Facebook for terms that would permit them to continue to provide their communities with the quality journalism they depend on.
For example, a small newspaper in Kentucky such the Daily News has absolutely no leverage to negotiate with these mega-giants. This bill will enable it to do just that.
