The New York Times has tapped Monica Davey as a deputy and the number two editor on the National desk. Before becoming an editor-reporter in 2017, Davey was a national correspondent covering the Midwest.
She also helped launch the Times’ case tacking project that has now turned into a full team of reporters working around the clock producing work that was recently awarded the Philip Meyer Journalism Award by I.R.E.
Julie Bloom has been named as director of news and will lead the evolution of National’s coverage of breaking news stories and build a strategy that puts all the disparate parts together. Bloom has been with the Times for more than 13 years, joining as culture web editor.
She was later promoted to the post of international culture editor, and then served as deputy weekend editor, before becoming The Times’ deputy National editor.
The Times has also appointed Kim Murphy as deputy for investigations. She will ensure that The Times finds rich targets for accountability reporting in the short, medium and long term. She will also, along with a team of reporters, help generate pieces off big events to stay ahead of the news cycle.
She will also look to cover big events to stay ahead of the news cycle, as well as longer-term stories that no one sees coming.
Previously, Murphy was a powerhouse editor who joined The Times three years ago from The Los Angeles Times where she served as a Northwestern correspondent. She was also assistant metro editor at Orange County Register and a staff writer for The Minot Daily News.
Murphy has also worked as an assistant editor at The North Biloxian.
Lastly, Jamie Stockwell, who joined The Times almost three years will be formally taking over Race/Related, the cross-desk initiative aimed at expanding coverage of race and attracting a more diverse readership.
Previously, Stockwell held the post of deputy National editor. Prior to joining The Times, Stockwell was with the San Antonio Express-News for more than 11 years. She joined as an assistant city editor, then held the post of deputy metro editor. She then became metro editor, before serving as managing editor.
Stockwell was also a staff writer for The Washington Post and has worked as a reporting intern in the Austin bureau at The Houston Chronicle. She was also an intern on the City desk at Austin American-Statesman and a summer intern at both Houston Chronicle and The (McAllen) Monitor.
