The Press Democrat seeks an executive editor

As the dominant media voice in Northern California with the largest newsroom between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, The Press Democrat – winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting and the flagship of Sonoma Media Investments – is seeking our next Executive Editor. The successful candidate will be a strategic, inspiring, and hard-charging news executive who will be a leader in our newsroom and in our community.

The Press Democrat is the flagship of Sonoma Media Investments, a locally owned and debt-free media company with more than 80 journalists across our eight publications.  With oversight of print and digital operations at The Press Democrat the role is a key member of our senior executive team. Additional responsibilities include support and oversight of weekly publications The North Bay Business Journal, The Sonoma Index-Tribune, The Petaluma Argus-Courier, La Prensa Sonoma, Sonoma County Gazette and Sonoma Magazine.

At Sonoma Media Investments, we value forward-thinking leaders who embrace innovation and emotional intelligence to catapult our organization ahead. We are focused on growing consumer engagement and revenue through high-quality content presented in new and creative ways.

The ideal candidate will have strong skills in mentoring, coaching, change management, diversity and inclusion and more. You must be a top-notch communicator, recruiter and hands-on coach who knows how to not only identify meaningful stories but how to edit next to reporters and elevate their work – and those skills must be on display across our entire portfolio.

This position is based in Santa Rosa, California, an hour north of San Francisco where vineyards give way to redwood forests and the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Two colleges, along with thriving tech, agriculture and governmental industries make this region an exciting and dynamic place to live and support the community through journalism.

Sonoma Media Investment values the contribution of our employees and offers a competitive compensation plan. We also offer an array of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401K and Paid Time Off.  Any job offer is conditional upon satisfactorily completing a pre-employment background investigation.
