The New York Times seeks a senior editor, Magazine

The Times Magazine seeks an experienced Senior Editor, directing audience, data and digital publishing. This critical member of the leadership team will oversee the magazine’s digital audience operation, manage its weekly digital production and help drive its ongoing digital transition. The best candidates will have a strategic vision for crafting story-specific audience plans, a mastery of the ins and outs of digital production (and an ability to manage a complex weekly process), a solid understanding of the company’s digital product strategy, a proven ability to work across and within teams, good editing and writing skills, and a sophisticated grasp of the magazine’s online presence. With this level of expertise, the digital director will join magazine leadership in pushing the desk towards a more digital-first future.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the magazine’s editor in chief to develop new digital strategies, product and audience goals, and advertising initiatives.
  • Support the magazine’s ongoing digital transition, helping editors, reporters, designers and photo editors as they develop new skills and establish new workflows.
  • Manage the production and publication process of all magazine articles online.
  • Act as the digital representative for the magazine internally, working with the newsroom, home desk editors, audience editors, ad sales, and product teams to achieve maximum alignment.
  • Manage the magazine’s audience editor to share and promote stories on social channels, through our newsletters and in collaboration with other desks.
  • Oversee magazine’s digital design and production staff.
  • Create new digital-first projects for the magazine.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience working in a digital leadership or management role at a major 5+ years of experience working in a digital leadership or management role at a major news organization.
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Understanding of how to work within most content management systems.
  • Understanding of and experience with ad product
  • Basic HTML and CSS. Javascript is a plus.
  • Basic video and audio editing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a mixed-media team.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may at times include nights and weekends.
  • A keen interest in and knowledge of The Times Magazine’s competitors, both in the United States and abroad.
  • Enthusiasm for perfecting our articles online is essential. Innovative, flexible, critical thinkers who communicate and collaborate well with a wide range of contributors will thrive.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $159,000.00 and $175,000.00.
