Pittsburgh City Paper seeks a news editor

Pittsburgh City Paper, the city’s free alt-weekly print newspaper and daily digital source for alternative news and entertainment, is hiring a full-time News Editor. This person will be an experienced journalist, editor, and newshound who aligns with City Paper’s mission: “to serve the greater Pittsburgh region with journalistic integrity, wit, and compassion, while amplifying the voices in the communities we serve, through both our news reporting and our arts and entertainment coverage.” The ideal candidate will have experience working across a variety of subjects, covering such topics as politics, social justice, labor, the environment, communities, business, infrastructure, health, and more, and is familiar with both print and online products.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Strategically manage the news vertical both online and in print, ensuring broad and diverse coverage of topics, as well as setting and enforcing deadlines for both quick-turnaround and long feature stories.
  • Work closely with the editor-in-chief and arts & entertainment editor to execute City Paper’s overall editorial strategy and vision.
  • Commission, assign, and edit news stories for both staff and freelance writers, shepherding their work from start to finish, ensuring high-quality output.
  • Self-assign and produce multiple stories per week both for the print and online editions of the paper on varying subjects pertaining to news.
  • Collaborate with the art director and staff photographer to pair news reporting and art in innovative and compelling ways.
  • Hire and manage news interns throughout the year.
  • Fulfill writing assignments given by the editor-in-chief.
  • Engage in regular communication with the editor-in-chief and arts & entertainment editor about the status of stories.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in journalism, communications, creative writing, or related field.
  • 5+ years of journalism experience, specializing in news coverage.
  • 2+ years of editing experience.
  • Proven record of exceptional reporting skills and writing ability.
  • Ability to balance multiple deadlines at once.
  • Ability to produce clean copy that is fact-checked and grammatically sound.
  • Working tech knowledge of Google Suite, Slack, CMS (content management systems), and social media.
  • An understanding of City Paper’s mission, perspective, and distinct voice as an alt-weekly.
  • Comfort working with a small staff in a collaborative manner that helps to facilitate an open and generative work environment.
