NY Times seeks deputy business editor

The New York Times is looking for a deputy business editor for news. This is a dynamic and newly defined leadership role at the center of our daily report.

The deputy editor for news will be charged with identifying the biggest business stories of the day and driving coverage across platforms and newsroom jurisdictions. Deep enthusiasm for conceiving new forms of storytelling and reading experiences is as important a qualification as is strong grounding in Times-standard journalism.

This editor should be able to craft coverage plans that are well-suited to the evolving ways our readers consume our journalism, and should be at ease with analytic tools that help push audience loyalty, engagement and growth. He or she must also be able to marshal reporters, editors and specialists from the business staff, and the broader newsroom, to create the best and most distinctive business report and reader experience possible.

Candidates should have strong leadership skills, be self-directing and highly collaborative, and possess impeccable news judgment. A demonstrated commitment to business journalism is a must, as is an established record in digital storytelling.

Qualities that come to mind in describing this person? Inspiring. Confident. Collegial. Curious. Passionate. Dynamic.

The deputy editor for news reports directly to the business editor and serves in his place in his absence. This is a time of tremendous change, and opportunity, at The Times. This editor will work with the business editor to define our vision for the report, set our priorities, and ensure reporters and editors succeed.

Candidates for this excluded position should contact Dean Murphy at nytbusiness@nytimes.com
