Minneapolis Star Tribune seeks economics reporter

The Star Tribune is looking for an experienced reporter to cover big-picture economic trends, with an emphasis on the job market and the financial circumstances of Minnesotans.

This is an opportunity to take a prominent role on a team of nearly two dozen writers and editors who are aiming to produce the best business report in the Midwest.

Minnesota is home to 17 Fortune 500 companies, including Cargill, General Mills, UnitedHealth Group, 3M and Target. The economics reporter’s mission will be to identify trends across the state’s diverse economy and to connect them with the lives of our readers. We’re looking for a sophisticated reporter with a drive to write stories that attract a large digital audience and that routinely land on the front page in print.

This reporter will be able to put major news developments in a broader economic context, develop quick-turn enterprise on a regular basis and also pursue more ambitious work. They should be able to use economic data as a starting point for stories that explain the economy in human terms.

The Star Tribune has won general excellence from SABEW four times in the past six years, as well as three Loeb awards in that period. We’re looking for someone who can help us build on this track record of success.

If you have questions about the position, email Assistant Managing Editor Thom Kupper at thom.kupper@startribune.com.
