Latino Media Collaborative seeks a news editor

Latino Media Collaborative (LMC) is an emerging nonprofit that leverages the power of ethnic and community media for positive social change in Latino communities while supporting the advancement of the sector. LMC engages in research, advocacy, and capacity building using a collaborative model with partner media outlets. LMC also manages multi-platform outreach campaigns and develops original content under its flagship initiative, CALÓ NEWS, a digital English-language news site.

CALÓ NEWS champions Latinos/as/x in our coverage of issues. We will increase the breadth and depth of knowledge about our communities by sharing authentic stories, highlighting our accomplishments and bringing light to the topics that mean the most to us, including healthcare, justice, education and media representation. We will also publish opinion and commentary pieces by Latino/a/x experts and amplify their voices and ideas.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The News Editor is a full-time, hybrid position based in Downtown Los Angeles, with weekly meetings held in person. The role is high-profile with an expectation of attendance on some weekend and/or evening events. The editor will be responsible for managing a team of reporters, freelancers and contributors, as well as managing the editorial calendar, story budgets, and daily editing of content to ensure fairness, accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They will also contribute to developing and mentoring new and emerging voices from the community and local universities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of print and/or online newsroom experience managing a team/department
  • Creative visionary thought leader with a finger on the pulse of Latino/a/x history and culture
  • Extensive knowledge of the Latino/a/x communities; East and Southeast Los Angeles a plus
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Experience working in the Latino/a/x media sector
  • Experience with project management and/or team leadership skills is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field
  • Spanish fluency preferred

START DATE: As soon as possible

LOCATION: Hybrid: Requires ability to work remotely and on-site when needed

COMPENSATION: $70k – $80k (commensurate with experience)
