Newsday seeks a real estate and retail reporter

This reporter will cover Long Island’s commercial real estate market and retail industry, with a focus on tracking commercial developments, store openings and closings and the forces shaping our local economy. You’ll break news, spot trends and develop enterprise stories that matter to our readers — all while building strong relationships with sources and delivering impactful, engaging journalism.

We’re looking for someone who thrives under tight deadlines, is comfortable juggling multiple stories and can work well with others to produce coverage that keeps our audience coming back for more. The reporter will also collaborate with editors to monitor metrics and apply data to inform coverage as we serve our loyal readers, seek new subscribers and strive to better understand key audiences and topics.

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Cover commercial real estate transactions, developments, and store openings and closings across Long Island.
  • Find smart enterprise stories and identify the trends shaping commercial real estate and retail.
  • Jump on breaking business news and pitch in on general assignment coverage when needed.
  • Work closely with the retail reporter to ensure well-rounded, complementary coverage of the retail sector.
  • Build a diverse network of sources to power your reporting and expand our audience reach.
  • Use multimedia tools and social media for story discovery, audience engagement and creative storytelling.
  • Collaborate with NewsdayTV and our digital team to bring stories to life with alternative and visual storytelling approaches.

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Three or more years of reporting experience; business reporting is a plus.
  • Proven ability to break news, meet deadlines, and deliver high-impact stories.
  • Skill in balancing quick-turn news with ambitious enterprise work.
  • A knack for spotting trends, cultivating sources, and digging into data-driven reporting.
  • Strong storytelling abilities with a sharp eye for detail and an engaging writing style.
  • Proficiency in multimedia tools, including smartphone photo and video, and digital platforms.
  • A team player with a collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.
  • A self-starter who can bring a creative approach to covering the news.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • The ability to find fresh, distinct angles and write lively, concise stories that reflect Newsday’s tone and format.

Physical Requirements

  • This position is hybrid with a three-day-per-week, in-office requirement.
  • Ability to travel throughout Long Island and the surrounding region.
  • Driver’s license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.

Compensation

  • The hourly base rate range for this role is $32.53 – $53.38, commensurate with experience.
  • This position is represented by the Graphics Communication Conference, PPPWU.
