Financial Planning seeks a managing editor

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Managing Editor within one of our leading financial services brands, Financial Planning. Financial Planning seeks an enterprising, experienced business writer or editor to manage the day-to-day operations of our publication. The successful candidate will have proven project management skills. They will determine daily, weekly and long-term priorities in coverage of the wealth management industry. Proven research skills, detail-oriented editing and experience creating an efficient workflow will all be crucial.

Primary job functions:

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing editorial production and quality control on brand content. This includes proofreading, assigning stories, upholding editorial standards, coordinating with art and production departments, coordinating social media and leading print production.

  • Stay abreast of important developments in the market served
  • Assist editor-in-chief in editorial management for the brand
  • Proof laid-out pages during production
  • Maintain relations with freelancers and seek new ones when needed.
  • Coordinate freelance assignments, and do initial edits of freelanced articles. This may include doing follow-up work with freelancers if clarification or more information is needed for their stories.
  • Produce feature articles, news stories and shorter news items each month with minimal supervision for magazine, newsletters and website
  • Write and report stories as needed
  • Track stories through the production process
  • Attend industry conferences as needed
  • Respond to press inquiries regarding news developments in the markets served
  • Take part in staff development
  • Raise the profile of our journalists with increased coverage, visibility, traffic and impact
  • Increase footprint of the brand across every platform (live events space, audio, video, etc.)
  • Research trends and ideas for content and provide up-to-date information
  • Edit continually for correct grammar, punctuation, accuracy and spelling
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required qualifications:

Candidates should have a minimum of three years reporting experience or experience managing a team, and preferably an understanding of wealth management and financial services. Essential skills include an ability to generate unique story ideas and provocative analysis for a sophisticated wealth management audience, write clearly on deadline and cooperate closely with editors and other colleagues in a fast-paced newsroom.

  • Excellent writing, reporting and news management skills
  • Ability to create and manage industry contacts
  • Ability to work independently and multitask on a constant basis and under deadlines
  • Familiarity with web publishing and content management systems
  • 3 or more years of full-time experience on an online or print publication
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, business or related field
  • Financial or business journalism experience a plus
