Boston Biz Journal seeks a life sciences reporter

The Boston Business Journal is looking for a top-notch reporter who can marry strong traditional journalism skills – source building, sharp news judgment, interviewing prowess, strong analytical and investigative reporting, clear writing, document use – with online and social media know-how. Whatever the platform, this reporter will produce strong journalism accompanied by perspective and context for a vibrant audience of business owners, executives and professionals in Eastern Massachusetts. Boston is a global hub of life sciences business, including biotech, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and is a highly competitive media market.

Skills

• Desire and ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources

• Proven excellence in reporting and writing.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

• Strong analytical and investigative-interviewing skills and intellectual curiosity that knows no bounds.

• Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online

• A clear drive to develop sources, build audience and beat the competition.

• Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure.

• Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors.

• Multimedia skills, including video, photos, broadcast, on-camera, helpful.

Duties

Specifically, this reporter will cover the life sciences beat. The reporter will cover the area’s publicly traded and venture-backed life sciences companies, some of which are making global headlines these days and all of which are at the forefront of research, innovation and commercialization. The ideal reporter will produce both short- and long-form stories daily online, weekly for print and longer-term for special projects and team enterprise efforts. A good Business Journal reporter is editor of his or her own beat coverage, and is easily able to discern what merits a story, an in-depth investigation or just a brief.
