Toronto Star makes a promotion, appoints new editor

Toronto Star’s editor Irene Gentle has been named vice-president of inclusion and strategic partnerships for Torstar and will be moving to her new post next month.

She will be succeeded by veteran journalist Anne Marie Owens as editor.

Gentle has been with the newspaper for more than 9 years. She joined as a business editor and then served as city editor. She then held the post of managing editor, before being named editor.

Prior to that, she was with The Hamilton Spectator for more than 5 years. There, she held various posts, including assignment editor, business editor, city editor and news editor.

Owens is currently executive advisor, strategic communications, for McMaster University. Before that, she was editor-in-chief of National Post, Inc. She has also served as deputy editor at Maclean’s.

Prior to that, she was with the National Post for 13 years, where she first held the post of national reporter, feature writer, and then served as managing editor; assistant managing editor; and news features editor.

Owens has also been on the board of the Canadian Journalism Foundation and was a member of the selection committee for the Massey College Journalism Fellowship for several years.
