Reuters editor in chief Alessandra Galloni sent out the following on Friday:

Colleagues,

I am excited to announce that Mike Williams will take on the Publishing role vacated by Simon Robinson. He will become Global Managing Editor, Publishing on August 3, reporting to me.

The Publishing role oversees how we edit, produce, curate, and distribute our news. Our hundreds of bureau chiefs, correspondents, photographers and videographers around the world report and gather the news. The Publishing team – the Global News Desk, Spot Enterprise, the Digital Team, Packaged Video, Graphics and more – ensures the news is edited to the highest quality and sent to our readers and clients in the right format, at the right speed, and at the right depth.

Mike is brilliantly placed to step into this role. He is one of the sharpest editors in our industry, with deep experience running journalists and coverage around the world. As the Global Enterprise Editor at Reuters since 2011, he has built our enterprise, investigative and data journalism operation into one of the highest impact teams at Reuters and one of the very strongest investigative units in journalism. The Enterprise team will continue to report to Mike; he and I will announce plans for how we’ll manage it soon.

Before joining Reuters, Mike was with The Wall Street Journal for 19 years. In his final role there, as Deputy Managing Editor and Page-One Editor, he was responsible for selecting and editing all daily news and features for the front page of the Journal, while running enterprise coverage and investigative projects for print and online. Mike, who speaks Japanese, joined the Journal in Tokyo, going on to hold positions including Assistant Foreign Editor, Japan Bureau Chief, Global Energy Editor, and Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe. As WSJE Editor, he worked closely with the Journal’s commercial team, experience that will serve him well as we build out our new digital products.

Mike will work with Simon over the next few weeks to ensure a steady and thoughtful handover. With Nick Tattersall’s recent appointment as the new Executive Editor, Reuters is in fantastic shape to continue to evolve, grow and strengthen our position as the trusted source of the world’s news.

Please join me in congratulating Mike.
