WSJ hires Podkul from ProPublica

Cezary Podkul

Cezary Podkul, a reporter at ProPublica covering New York, has been hired by The Wall Street Journal for its financial enterprise team.

He will start in July.

Previously, he worked as a reporter at Reuters specializing in data-driven news stories.

His work with Carrick Mollenkamp for Reuters’s “Uneasy Money” series was a finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism. He has covered energy and commodities and the private equity industry, among other beats, after leaving investment banking in 2008 to pursue journalism.

Since July 2015, he has spearheaded ProPublica’s reporting on state and local New York City issues, including regulators’ failure to enforce rent laws.

Cezary earned a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 and is a 2011 alumnus of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, where he won the Melvin Mencher Prize for Superior Reporting.

He won SABEW’s 2015 honor as the best business journalist under 30 and is adept with data visualization.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
