Washington Post names Kuo its China bureau chief

Lily Kuo

Lily Kuo will be joining the Washington Post as its China bureau chief.

Her new role begins Dec. 14. However, until her accreditation is approved, Kuo will be reporting on China from outside the country, joining an Asia-based team that includes correspondents Gerry Shih and Eva Dou.

Most recently, Kuo was Beijing bureau chief at The Guardian. She has also worked at Quartz for more than 5 years, joining as an Asia correspondent, reporting on business, economic and general news in Greater China from Hong Kong.

Later on, she held the post of Africa correspondent, covering China’s presence in Africa as well as business and economic news in East Africa.

She has also worked as a journalist, news associate, at Thomson Reuters and reported on features and spot news on Chinese society, environment, and health as a special correspondent for the Los Angeles Times.

She was also an editor at City Weekend and has held the posts of intern producer and reporter at WUNC and The China Post, respectively.

Kuo is a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also holds one MSc. in international studies from Peking University and another MSc. in international affairs from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
