Derek Thompson, who has been on the business news team at TheAtlantic.com for the past two years, has been named its business editor.
Betsy Rothstein of FishbowlDC has a memo from Bob Cohn, editorial director of Atlantic Digital, that states, “After a thorough search process that surfaced many excellent candidates, I am happy to report that we found a great business editor for TheAtlantic.com rather close to home. Derek Thompson started at the company in 2008 as a fellow in the innovation center, working on new digital products. He joined the business team at The Atlantic in 2009 and for the last two years has been a backbone of the channel: writing posts, editing outside contributors, producing pages, and thinking of new ways to expand and package our coverage. Derek’s instincts for creativity and rigor make him a great choice for this job.
“Working with Megan [McArdle] and Dan [Indiviglio], Derek will continue to write for business (and other channels as well). Among his new duties: help craft a strategic vision for the business channel, expand the scope of coverage, hire new writers, and ensure the overall editorial quality of our business coverage. A senior editor, Derek will report to John [Gould].
“Please join me in congratulating Derek on his new role.”
