The need for young reporters to understand business

The move by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism from the American Press Institute in Reston, Va., to the Arizona State University campus signals the need for all journalists to understand the business world, writes Eugene Scott of the Arizona Republic.

Scott quotes Chris Callahan, the dean of the Cronkite School of Journalism, as saying that he hopes the move will lead to a business journalism course at Arizona State and eventually a sequence in business journalism.

Scott wrote, “There’s a strong need for young journalists who understand the changing business world. Callahan said it’s best to train those journalists while they are in school rather than hoping they figure things out for themselves during their careers.

“The center will continue to provide training for professionals, but will focus more on young journalists by creating an internship program for business journalism students, a scholarship program to help students study business journalism, and a seminar for prospective business journalism professors.”
