Kim Quillen, business source editor at the Chicago Tribune, was installed as the new president of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing on Monday.
She succeeds Bryan Borzykowski, freelance business journalist, who served as SABEW’s president for the past year. Quillen’s term is from spring 2020-2021.
Quillen has been one of the editors on the Chicago Tribune business desk since 2016. She is an award-winning business journalist with more than 20 years of experience.
Before joining the Chicago Tribune, Quillen spent three years in various editing positions at The Arizona Republic. She also served as business editor at The Times-Picayune, where she was involved in the New Orleans newspaper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
Earlier in her career, Quillen worked for the Delaware State News and for weekly and monthly business journals in her home state of Delaware. She earned an M.A. from American University’s School of Communication and a B.A. in economics from Mary Washington College.
“This is certainly a challenging time, but business journalism – and SABEW – has never been more important,” Quillen said in a statement.
“The SABEW board will be looking at new ways of serving and supporting our members during this difficult period. This will be a pivotal year for SABEW, and we’re going to think creatively and look for new opportunities. Members can expect a continuation of SABEW’s strong virtual training series as well as new offerings,” said Quillen.
In addition to Quillen, SABEW’s spring 2020-2021 officer ladder is comprised of vice president Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief, Investopedia, and secretary/treasurer Heather Long, economics correspondent, The Washington Post.
