Learn from government professionals that gather and analyze the nation’s economic data at SABEW’s 2022 Goldschmidt Fellowship data immersion workshop that runs from Sunday, March 20 through Thursday, March 24 in Washington, D.C.

With the workshop focusing on understanding how the government uses data, fellows will also receive training on FOIA and learn how to track down hidden data. Journalists will be surrounded by experts during this all-access program and will be able to speak directly with those who compile and manage the statistics as they explore the large cache of data each agency produces, and understand the data’s importance to their communities.

The workshop is in its eighth year and is funded annually by a grant from the Illinois-based Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation to SABEW.

The week-long event will include representatives from the following:

  • American Statistical Association (ASA)
  • Brookings
  • U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)
  • U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
  • U.S. Census Bureau
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
  • Investment Company Institute

Seventeen applicants will be selected as fellows. Out-of-town participants will receive a modest stipend to offset meals and travel costs. Four nights of lodging plus breakfast will be provided at the Hilton Garden Inn-Washington Downtown hotel. Participants or their employers must cover any additional expenses. (If your company can pay for your entire expenses, it will be appreciated, as it may allow another applicant to attend.)

Attendance is required at all sessions. Employers are expected to give the participants time to learn and not require work during the week. The workshop seeks reporters or editors of all experience levels, and all applicants must be SABEW members.
