Reuters bureau chief in Pakistan/Afghanistan dies

Reuters said Monday its bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan has died, reports Wajahat S. Khan and Mushtaq Yusufzai of NBC News.

Khan and Yusfzai write, “Maria Golovnina was 34. The news agency said the Islamabad-based journalist lost consciousness in her office and was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“‘Maria was a superb journalist with a long and varied career at Reuters,’ the news agency said in a statement. ‘Her talents, energy and can-do spirit will be sorely missed.’

“Pakistani officials also confirmed Golovnina’s death and said the body had been transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. No immediate cause of death was given and an autopsy has not yet been conducted, according to Dr. Wasim Khwaja.

“Golovnina had served as Reuters’ bureau chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2013. Prior to that posting, the Russian national worked in London, Singapore, Moscow, Afghanistan and Iraq.”
