Marketwatch media columnist Jon Friedman has a column on Friday about how journalists should, and shouldn’t, be writing about the anniversaries of Hurricane Katrina and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and he was kind enough to quote me about how the business aspects of the stories.
Friedman wrote, “Focus on the financial aspects of both stories. “Katrina and 9/11 are both business stories, and the business angle of both of them always seems to get downplayed in the media,” noted Chris Roush, an assistant journalism professor at the University of North Carolina. “Katrina was the worst economic disaster in the history of this country, while the Sept. 11 terrorists struck the economic center of this country. In addition, both events had far-reaching economic impact. I was in New Orleans back in March, and I was struck by how many national businesses have kept their locations shuttered.”
