New Detroit biz mag to focus on behind the scenes

DBusiness bills itself as a regional business magazine focused on growing Michigan companies and behind-the-scenes looks at Michigan executives. Its editor is R.J. King, a former Detroit News business reporter.

In the News on Thursday, Alexa Stanard wrote, “Indeed, DBusiness’ future depends on the struggling economy it hopes to boost. A glossy magazine is expensive to produce, and advertising revenue is often scarce in a tough economy.

“‘The track record in this market for business magazines has been dismal,’ said Ben Burns, head of the journalism program at Wayne State University.

“‘This market is particularly tough because, let’s face it, Michigan’s economy is in the dumper. I give them points for bravery.

“‘The bottom line in terms of survivability has nothing to do with content, it has to do with the advertising base,’ Burns added. ‘That’s going to be the concern — who are the advertisers who will stick with it?'”
