BusinessWeek columnist Gene Marcial, who writes about the stock market, gave an interview to the Asian Journal in which he described his job.Amee Enriquez wrote, “Asked to describe his column, Gene wrote, ‘Well, it is a news story column that reports on what important investors are doing in the stock market. My sources tell me all kinds of things going on in the market and I write any that I think would be of interest to investors. Invariably, the stocks I mention move significantly in price after the column’s publication. That is its value.’
“‘When I write about a stock, readers take notice. And the readers include not only small, individual investors but the professionals including analysts, brokers, investment managers, and corporate executives.'”
Later, Marcial stated, “I always strive to produce the ‘best’ column each week. So to me, each column is
worthy of being called one of the best if not the best. I myself without being immodest marvel at my columns when I read them, say, weeks or months later. They make sense and I say to myself, ‘Hey, this is a good column. I only say that not to boast but because if I feel like that about my product, then it must also have resonated with my readers.”
