Jim Loney, the editor in charge of the breaking news team at Reuters in its Washington bureau, has resigned.
In an email to colleagues, Loney wrote:
Just a note before I go to say thank you to the reporters, editors and managers whose kindness, patience and wisdom have made Reuters just the finest place to work.
As I move into a new phase that hopefully includes less work and more play, I take two decades of rich memories – of great stories, big adventures and wonderful workmates who provided inspiration every day with their passion, dedication, courage and friendship. What more could anyone ask?

Loney has become the editor in charge of the breaking news team in Washington earlier this year.
He began his Reuters career more than 20 years ago in Miami and Los Angeles. From his Florida base he covered everything from an erupting volcano in Montserrat to Fidel Castro and Cuban exile politics to the overthrow of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in Haiti. His brief time in Los Angeles included the O.J. Simpson slow-speed chase and the Northridge earthquake.
In 2010 Loney took a job as deputy bureau chief in Iraq where he saw the entrenchment of Maliki and the departure of U.S. troops. He moved to the World Desk in Washington in 2012 and to the D.C. bureau with the Breaking News Team this year.
