How CNBC’s Farr ferrets out good health tech stories

Christina Farr

CNBC health and technology reporter Christina Farr spoke with Dr. Josh Luke on his “Dr. Luke’s Waiting Room” podcast about how she finds stories and determining how to report stories on her beat.

Farr said she likes to frame her stories around people.

“One of the things that is a guiding principle for me and that our editors have shared is that a story is better focused on people and not things,” said Farr. “If you can focus [new technology] around an individual who is relatable and how that technology is being used in their life, that’s just a more personal and relevant story.”

Farr also added that she’s more interested in finding news rather than going with what she gets from public relations professionals.

“I don’t tend to jump at pitches that people have sent out to hundreds of reporters because there’s not much value in it…” she said. “I like to dig out scoops on companies that aren’t being public. I can give you information that you don’t have otherwise.”
