Harris becomes business investigative reporter at USA Today

Craig Harris has become a business investigative reporter at USA Today.

He will be relocating to San Diego.

Harris has been an investigative reporter for The Arizona Republic/azcentral.

He has been in the business for 28 years, and he’s worked at six daily newspapers — The Olympian in Olympia, Wash.; The Oregonian in Portland, Ore.; The Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore.; The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky.; and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

In 2012 and 2014, Harris was one of the lead writers when The Republic was a finalist in breaking news coverage for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2011 and 2012, Harris won the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting presented by Syracuse University and first place in the Barlett and Steele Awards for Investigative Business Journalism for work he did on Arizona’s pension systems.

In 2015, he was part of a team that won the Scripps Howard investigative award and the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) award for coverage of the Veterans Affairs scandal. In 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019, Harris was named Arizona Journalist of the Year. In 2017 and 2019, Harris won George Polk Awards for his reporting on state employees being wrongly fired and charter schools.

Harris is a 1989 graduate of the University of Oregon, where he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
