Fort Worth biz section and the local biz community
April 2, 2006
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram business section took it on the chin in this morning’s paper in a scathing critique from a reader, who is a board member of a local company.
Kenneth H. Jones writes, “If you [at the Star-Telegram] think you are truly objective in reporting the news, perhaps you can see why so many local business people feel they are treated unfairly, with a negative bias and, in general, in the most unflattering manner possible after reading the March 4, 2006, Business section of the Star-Telegram.
“It is a classic example of this type of treatment as it relates to Marvin Girouard. The byline and article are totally about Bombay’s CEO stepping down as per agreement.
“There is no mention of Marvin or Pier 1 Imports in the article. However, along with the picture of James Carreker are three pictures of other CEOs, two of whom have resigned: David Edmondson at Radio Shack and Mary Forte at Zale Corp. (Apparently the paper makes a distinction between “stepping down” and “resigning.”)
“However, along with these photos in a grouping called “Shopping for a CEO” is a picture of Marvin, who has neither stepped down nor resigned but is described below the picture with the phrase “denies a newspaper report [yours, I believe] suggesting the board is planning a management shake-up.” (Emphasis and comment added.)”
