Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist Dennis Buster writes Tuesday about Larry Werner, a former business editor and business writer at the paper who is retiring after 24 years.
Werner was president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in 1989.
Buster wrote, “Larry knows everybody. If he’s not related to ’em by marriage (his wife is a Zweber), he’s met them in one of his Star Tribune jobs, through his catering company or through some Chamber of Commerce-type gathering. (My fondest hope for Larry’s retirement is that, before it begins, he’ll beam me the contents of his Palm Pilot’s address book.)
“Mostly, though, he’s probably met a ton of people because he’s full of energy and enthusiasm and good cheer and good ideas and optimism — a classic extrovert. He’s also a good listener — something I’m often not. I think that may have made him slightly nuts a time or two in the past year.
“One of the truths in the newspaper business is that good people come and good people go, but the paper still comes out each day anyway. And this one will continue, I hope, to come out for countless days ahead. But it’s come out a little better with Larry’s help for more than two decades.”
