Does the news media make economics coverage negative?

That’s the summary of what the Newsbusters blog is saying about Robert Samuelson’s column in this week’s issue of Newsweek.

Samuelson’s column is about five things that could go wrong with the economy in 2006, including the potential for GM to file for bankruptcy court protection. He states, “All this good news is, of course, bad for the news business,â€? and asked, “Could anything darken the outlook and, coincidentally, feed journalism’s appetite for misfortune?â€?

Newsbusters, which exists to root out the liberal bias in the media, states, “Of course, the beauty of these negative expectations is that the media can continue to report them on a regular basis even if they don’t turn out to be true. If only regular Americans could be so consistently wrong in their places of work without fretting over getting fired.”
