Hayleigh Colombo of The Indianapolis Star writes about her former editor, Indianapolis Business Journal’s Greg Andrews, who died last month at the age of 60.
Colombo writes, “With his head pointed down at the floor, he’d briskly walk up and down the long hallways at the old IBJ offices at 41 E. Washington St. Sometimes he’d look up with a small smile as I passed by him, but other times he was locked in the zone, thinking of deadlines, column ideas and his long task list.
“He’d frequently be holed up in his office alone for hours at a time. I never knew what he was doing, and then I’d read the weekly IBJ issue and realize that on top of dealing with all of his reporters and editing the issue, he had also somehow found time to write a meticulously reported column, called ‘Behind the News,’ full of business journalism and lawsuit scoops I could only dream of.
“‘He was a reporter first,’ Russell said. ‘I don’t think people regularly see that combination of an editor who’s doing real document-digging and shoe-leather reporting on top of running a newsroom.’
“I never thought much of what he named his column, but it sticks out to me now. ‘Behind the news’ is the perfect way to describe a journalist like Andrews.”
