The deadline of Aug. 2 for entries in the fourth annual Barlett & Steele Awards for Investigative Business Journalism is fast approaching. The Gold Award recipient receives $5,00 and the Silver Award winner $2,000, funded by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.
Judges look for investigative enterprise, strong business theme, elegant writing style, clarity and impact. Entries must also follow Jim Steele’s admonition to “tell me something I don’t know.”
Publications and online sites of all sizes are encouraged to apply. Complete details are at Barlett & Steele Awards 2010. Registration and application are at Barlett & Steele Contest Entry: BusinessJournalism.org. Applications will be accepted only online and from editors or the contest coordinator designated by your news organization. Entries must have appeared between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Each news organization is limited to two entries and four stories per entry.
Last year’s Gold Award went to the Miami Herald for a team series that uncovered criminals working in the Florida mortgage industry. The Silver went to Bloomberg Markets magazine for an article investigating insurnce sales through a non-profit organization for seniors.
