Columbia's Terri Thompson to be honored

Terri Thompson, director of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia University, will be honored by the New York Financial Writers’ Association on Thursday, June 8.

She will receive the NYFWA’s Elliott V. Bell Award, given “to an outstanding journalist for a significant long-term contribution to the profession of financial journalism.”

Thompson will receive the award from Stephen B. Shepard, former BusinessWeek editor, current dean of the graduate program in journalism at City University of New York, and the founder of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship. Bell was a BusinessWeek editor.

Past winners include CNN’s Myron Kandel, Bloomberg News’ Matt Winkler and the Wall Street Journal’s Barney Calame.

Thompson became director of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in June 1993. In her 20 years as a business journalist, she has reported, written and/or edited for the Coralville (Iowa) Courier, Purchasing Magazine, BusinessWeek, Institutional Investor, U.S. News & World Report and Lear’s.

A graduate of New York University and Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, and a 1981 Bagehot Fellow at Columbia, she is the author of Biz Kids’ Guide to Success: Money-Making Ideas for Young Entrepreneurs (Barron’s, 1992) and editor of Writing About Business: The New Columbia Knight-Bagehot Guide to Economics and Business Journalism (Columbia University Press, 2000).

Thompson has received numerous awards for her work as a financial reporter. She is a former president of the New York Financial Writers’ Association.

The Financial Writers’ annual awards dinner is June 8. The guest speaker is SEC chairman Christopher Cox.
