CNBC's global show

The Independent, the British newspaper, has a nice analysis piece in this morning’s paper about how business news cable channel CNBC is now running a simultaneous broadcast on three different continents, with the idea being that people outside of North America will want the same business news as those inside of North America. It’s kind of a “globalization” of the old Wall Street Journal strategy that business people in Bangor, Maine, would want the same business news as business people in San Diego.

Anyway, here are some highlights from the article:

1. “The new programme, which reflects the increasing globalisation of markets and turns the competition up a notch on CNBC rivals, will be produced from CNBC headquarters in London. It’s the obvious place because it is in the middle of the three time zones.”

2. “Chief executives, a key target audience for CNBC, have already expressed support for the new programme which runs from 10am to 12pm in London. For the first time they will be able to speak directly and simultaneously to investors on three continents.”

3. “The channel sees its rivals as all media aimed at a business audience whether it is other television channels such as Bloomberg, radio stations, business magazines or newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. And CNBC has no hesitation in playing rough against print.”
