Rick Doyle of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin in Washington state writes Sunday about how the paper will move its business section inside and cut its stock listings.
Doyle wrote, “Another thing readers told us is that when we run the Business page on the front of a section they often don’t look inside because they believe it is a Business section. That is not the case. There are stories from the Northwest, nation and world in the section that people are missing.
“So, we are moving the Business page inside the section to make it more obvious that the section is simply a continuation of news from the first section.
“We also will discontinue running the market report. This is a part of a decade-long industry trend as readers are finding more up-to-date information through Web sites and from their brokers.
“A study released recently by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University found that one-third of small-circulation daily newspapers no longer print stock market reports.”
