The Chico Enterprise Record in California has become the latest newspaper to cut its stock listings. It will no longer run stock listings during the week, and will run only a one-page summary on Saturday.
A story in Tuesday’s paper noted, “At a time when advertising revenue is down, saving four pages in newsprint is a considerable expense savings, but there are other factors.
“‘More people are tracking their stocks listings in real time on the Internet and fewer are reading the tables in the newspaper,’ said Publisher Wolf Rosenberg. ‘That’s why so many newspapers have reduced or eliminated their listings.
“‘By the same token, we realize some readers prefer seeing the listings in print, which is why we’ll run the weekly review on Saturday. We hope once a week is adequate for the casual investor. Those who buy and sell stocks on a daily basis aren’t getting their listings from the newspaper.’
“Rosenberg pointed out that the E-R’s Web site, www.chicoer.com/business, offers the chance for readers to build a portfolio and track their stocks in real time. Click on the index under ‘market snapshot’ to build a custom portfolio.”
