Stan Wischnowski, executive editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, sent out the following announcement to the staff on Thursday:
Staff,
We are thrilled to announce that Dan Hirschhorn — an accomplished editor, digital leader, political journalist and Philadelphia native — is joining our newsroom. Dan will be our Senior Politics Editor and a Deputy News Editor, reporting to John Martin. Working with Politics Editor Tom Fitzgerald, Dan will direct our enlarged, 12-member Politics & Governing team. Dan and Tom’s deep national political reporting and editing experience puts us in a great position to dominate 2020 coverage in our region. Dan will also play a key role in setting digital strategy for our News desk, and will lend Molly Eichel an assist in the launch of Now Team.
Some of you may recall Dan from his early political blogging days, when he wrote for PolitickerPA and launched pa2010. He’s been very busy in the years since. Dan covered national politics for Politico and The Daily. He became an editor at TIME, where over five years Dan built and directed the magazine’s first digital news desk. Dan grew that news desk into a cross-brand team of about two dozen reporters and editors, and was named Director of News for both Time and all Time Inc. titles. He joined Barron’s last year as Managing Editor, and he’s since been promoted to Digital Editorial Director.
Dan grew up at 24th and Lombard, and he’s the kind of Philadelphian who held on to his 215 prefix in exile. He’s delighted to be returning to the city.
For the last six years, Dan has built an exceptional track record helping legacy news organizations embrace strong, timely, digital-first coverage. We’re delighted that he’ll continue that work with us. His first day is October 7.
Stay tuned. We’ll have more announcements on other new members of the newsroom in the days and weeks ahead.
