Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who spent time in a Russian prison, will release his book about the experience later this year, reports Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker.
Cartwright reports, “Sentenced to 16 years in a high-security penal colony, he was released as part of one of the largest prisoner swap deals since the Cold War.
“Now a free man, Gershkovich has put pen to paper documenting his time behind bars. This Cursed Beautiful Land: A Russian-American Story covers his time in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo prison as his editors and bureaucrats dabbled behind the scenes to clear his name and get him home.
“When the book from Penguin Random House hits shelves on September 29, it will mark the first time Gershkovich has shared his story, but for now, Breaker has been given a sneak peek of the cover, and it’s a ripper.
“Gershkovich hasn’t had a byline in the Journal since 2024, but we are reliably informed that now that his book is at the printers, he plans to get back to reporting.”
