Meredith Klein of Meredith & The Media interviewed Bonny Ghosh, editorial director of Inc., about her job.

Here is an excerpt:

As editorial director at Inc., can you share more about what your role encompasses across Inc.com, shows and podcasts like Founder Group Chat, as well as Inc.’s events like Inc. 5000, Founders House at SXSW, and more?

  • I have an interesting octopus kind of role at Inc., and there are multiple pillars. The recognition programs all roll into my team, and also the programming of the events like the Inc. 5000 and Founders House. We also do smaller events throughout the year, where we have really great live conversations. Those also roll into me, which is how Meredith and I met, because we throw a huge event at South by Southwest that really taps into great impactful conversations.
  • I think that is a huge pillar of Inc. and a through line that goes through all of our content, as well as our events. What distinguishes Inc. from other business publications is that we are founder-driven, but we’re also service journalism-driven. We think through: What is the strategy? What is an insight? If it’s funding, if it’s bootstrapping a particular marketing campaign, a particular social campaign: What did this founder do that really led to their success? We lean into sharing that story with other founders who are also growing their companies.
  • When you come to Founders House, there’s a lot of inspiration porn, and Inc. instead is very strategy-driven. We are very pointed and strategic about the types of conversations that we stand up. We want the people who participate in our talks to be very candid about getting into the weeds. Tell me about your term sheet. Tell me about your board, and the things that you had to give up when you took outside funding. Those types of candid conversations are very “Inc.-y” events.
