Meredith Klein of Meredith and the Media interviewed artificial intelligence reporter Hayden Field of The Verge about her job.

Here is an excerpt:

  • You joined The Verge a few months ago to cover AI. What’s driving your coverage?
    • The AI industry’s societal implications, the power dynamics, regulatory questions, and who’s driving the tech’s development forward, whether large companies, preeminent labs, or new startups.
    • Also, I hadn’t written about policy in a while before starting in this role, but now, it’s becoming more and more central to the AI conversation, because states are taking things into their own hands. There are a lot of bills that are becoming household names, because they’re starting to chart the course for what we may see in the next few years.
    • Another part of what’s driving my coverage is what companies are promising, compared to what they’re delivering. For example, AI browsers, we’re seeing a bunch of them come out, as well as AI agents and agentic tools. But what companies are promising they can do sometimes differs from what they actually can do, so we’re highlighting those differences, as well. But on the science and biomedicine side of things, a lot of times, these systems are delivering beyond what was planned and surpassing expectations, so that’s exciting.
